What makes ultra-low sulfur heating oil a better way to heat your home? Heating oil in general has a higher BTU output per gallon than other types of fuels. That means it will warm up your home faster than other types of fuels. It’s also true of ultra-low sulfur heating oil. But because it burns so cleanly, ultra-low sulfur heating oil is even more efficient, and it’s easier on your equipment. It’s also better for the environment, too.
That all adds up make ultra-low sulfur oil the best choice for the damp cold winters we see here on Long Island. Other options, like natural gas and electricity, just don’t provide the same heating energy. And, while traditional heating oil has a bad rap as a dirty fuel, today’s ultra-low sulfur heating oil is as clean an option as any of those other fuels.
Ultra-low sulfur heating oil is the result of dramatic enhancements in the refining process that has resulted in fuel that burns 95% cleaner than it did in the 1970s. As a result, the heating oil we deliver to fill your tank burns so cleanly, producing such negligible emissions, that the Federal Clean Air Act doesn’t even regulate it anymore. In fact, it’s the only type of heating oil still used in New York State.
So how much cleaner is it? Traditional heating oil has a sulfur content of up to 4,000 parts per million. In contrast, ultra-low sulfur heating oil has a sulfur content of just 15 parts per million.
Heating oil is already more efficient than natural gas in terms of Btu content. You need to burn about 40% more natural gas to receive the heating equivalent of heating oil. Cleaner oil burns even more efficiently, helping to keep heating costs down even more. Ultra-low sulfur heating oil also opens the door to super-efficient heating systems, which can increase the advantages of heating oil over natural gas even more.
Research conducted by the Energy Research Council/Brookhaven National Laboratory found fuel savings as high as 48.3% when outdated equipment is replaced with a new, high-efficiency boiler. That’s one more reason more people are sticking to oil—especially where winters are colder, like here in the Northeast.
